Peanuts on the Floor
"And you can throw the peanut shells right on the floor!”
Why are we so excited about this practice?
Are we so bottled up and prim and proper that the first opportunity to be a messy slob, we can’t get enough?
The thought with peanuts is that it’s a cheap and easy snack to offer for free.
While you wait, you can munch and munch and toss and toss. The restaurant doesn’t care. The idea with the shells on the ground is that in a rowdy bar with a lot of messes and spills, the shells could soak up some of the beer and liquor for a jump-start on cleanup. This, to me, is very debatable. Texas Roadhouse, Logan’s Steakhouse,
Five Guys Burgers, and local watering holes have allowed this practice for a number of years. It was one of their selling points. Eventually, this became an issue, and people sued after slipping on them, citing that the restaurants knowingly allowed a hazard. And then there are folks with peanut allergies—with the constant aroma of peanuts wafting around the whole establishment not helping their issue.
So why do we love making a mess for someone else to clean up?
Is it “so fun”?
Is it that we need a small release, and this one is allowed?
Does it bring back the feeling of being a kid?
I don’t know…
-Cheers
